Before Whirlpool bought it in 2006, Maytag was a full appliance company with its own engineering. It had absorbed JennAir in the early 1980s and Amana in 2001, and it built laundry, refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges in its own plants. Maytag-built top-loaders from that era used a belt-driven design with a durable transmission, and their usual repairs are belts, pumps, lid switches and timers. The Neptune front-loaders, introduced in the late 1990s, were Maytag’s own high-efficiency design; their weak points were door locks, control and motor boards, and odor from moisture left in the tub. Parts for some pre-2006 designs are thinning out, so we check availability early.
After the merger, Maytag laundry moved onto Whirlpool platforms. Most Bravos and Centennial top-loaders, and the current agitator and Commercial Technology models, share Whirlpool’s high-efficiency top-load hardware: a lid lock, a separate drain pump, suspension rods and, on the vertical-modular versions, a motor under the tub with a shift actuator. Front-loaders such as the Maxima line share Whirlpool front-load hardware. Maytag differentiates with heavier components in some areas, sturdier trim and longer limited parts coverage on select models, but the failure points match their Whirlpool siblings, which keeps parts common and repairs predictable.
Maytag dryers follow the same split. Older Maytag-built dryers are sturdy and plain, and they wear at drum rollers, glides, idler pulleys, belts and the thermal parts in the heat circuit. Current Maytag dryers are built on Whirlpool dryer platforms and share rollers, belts, heating elements, thermal fuses and gas valve coils with them. Gas models from both eras use a glow-bar igniter, a flame sensor and a two-coil valve, a combination that fails in well-understood ways. Most dryer repairs on either generation are finished in one visit, and dryers are the Maytag products we most often keep running for decades.
In the kitchen, Maytag refrigerators and dishwashers built after the merger come from Whirlpool plants. Maytag French-door and side-by-side refrigerators share defrost parts, fans, inlet valves and ice makers with Whirlpool, and Maytag dishwashers use the Whirlpool sump, pump and manual-clean filters. Older Maytag-built dishwashers and refrigerators still turn up in Sacramento homes, as do Maytag Gemini double-oven ranges, where each cavity has its own heating parts and temperature sensor. On cooking appliances, failed bake elements, igniters and sensors are the everyday repairs; control boards and clock units are the costlier ones.
