GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016, but the engineering, the parts system and most of the model numbering carried straight through the change, so a 2012 GE and a 2022 GE share more than the badge suggests. The lineup splits into GE, GE Profile and Café, with Monogram above them. Profile and Café are largely the standard GE platforms with extra features layered on: hidden controls, steam, Wi-Fi, bottle jets, custom hardware. The parts that wear out are therefore often identical. What differs is the control electronics and the trim, and that is where a Café repair can take longer to source.
GE is quieter about error codes than some brands. Many GE washers and dishwashers report trouble by flashing a light or stopping mid-cycle rather than printing a code, while newer refrigerators, ranges and Profile laundry do show codes on a display. Most GE machines built in the last decade or two also hide a service mode, entered by a button or knob sequence, that replays stored faults and lets the technician run the pump, valves, fans or motor one at a time. That is how we separate a failed part from a control that is commanding it wrongly, and it is why we rarely replace a board on a hunch.
In GE refrigerators the pattern depends on the layout. Top-freezers and side-by-sides mostly come to us with defrost problems, where a failed heater, thermostat or sensor lets frost choke the evaporator, or with a worn evaporator fan motor that squeals for weeks before it stops. French-door models add ice-maker trouble in the fresh-food door. GE dishwashers tend to lose the touchpad or control board, especially the models with controls hidden along the top edge of the door, and the drain pump is the next usual suspect. Each of those has its own set of tells, covered in detail on the dedicated GE pages.
GE top-load washers from roughly the last decade use a small mode shifter under the tub to move the drive between agitate and spin. When it fails, the washer fills and then hums, clicks or refuses one of the two motions. Older belt-drive GE top-loaders had a spin and agitate clutch that wore out with similar results. GE dryers are simple machines: belts, idler pulleys, drum slides, thermal fuses, plus igniters and gas valve coils on gas models. On ranges and wall ovens we replace bake and broil elements, gas oven igniters that glow but no longer draw enough current to open the valve, and control boards on electronic models.
Before ordering anything we read the model and serial tag. On a GE refrigerator it sits inside the fresh-food section on a side wall or the ceiling; on a dishwasher it is on the tub edge, visible with the door open; on a washer, under the lid or on the back; on a range, on the frame behind the drawer or the oven door. The first two letters of a GE serial encode the month and year of manufacture, and because the year letter repeats on a twelve-year cycle, the model style settles which decade. That date tells us which revision of a board, valve or shifter to bring.
